Graphic design for packaging literally adds another dimension to the design process; the design needs to work as a three-dimensional object.
Our packaging design process
Before starting design work we give careful thought to the information that needs to be placed on packaging, and where/how it will be displayed. It needs to be clear and informative. It might make the difference between someone buying your product, or someone else’s
Bar codes, and any standard markings such CE and recycling marks, also have to be considered. Of course, we make sure that the design is eye catching and attractive too.
The final step before going to print is to make a three-dimensional mockup of the design. We print it, fold it and check that it all works.

What is important when designing packaging?

Liaison with the producer of the packaging is vital if the design is to work properly. The process usually starts with a “cutter guide”, which is an exact shape of the pack when it is printed flat, before it is folded to shape. This will include all the flaps and locking mechanisms of the carton. It is usually provided by the packaging manufacturer. It is the blank page for the design and it is then the designer’s job to produce a design that fits it exactly.
We always make a three-dimensional mockup of a design before submitting it for printing. Seeing a design on a screen is very different to seeing it actually constructed; it is only then that the various design elements can be seen in their finished form.
The printing technology that will be used, and the material that the design will be printed on are other important factors. For example, white text as seen on a screen will not be white if it is printed on a coloured material, so special printing techniques are needed.
